Basic Information In the Story (Non-Spoiling)
Squall currently attends and resides at the Balamb Garden Miliary Academy, a place which trains young people to become a part of the elite military group known as SeeD. He is the main character in the story. Most everyone around Balamb Garden know Squall as a 'lone wolf', a loner who really doesn't take time out to interact with his fellow students, and when others do try to get close to them he simply brushes them off or ignores them.
When the game begins Squall is seen dueling with his rival, Seifer Almasy. The two exchange blows and each ends up with a scar which sets in the center of their forehead, between their eyes down to the upper portion of their noses. When the playable area of the game begins, Squall is seen in the infirmiary where the Doctor calls Quistis, a young woman who is Squall's instructer. After a few events Squall goes with Quistis to the Fire Cavern to complete one part of his SeeD exam which is to capture a Guardian Force which resides within, Ifrit. Afterwards things begin to pick up with the SeeD test in Dollet, which takes many of the characters to the communication towers. After the SeeD test is a party - a party which will ultimately begin to change Squall's life. There he meets Rinoa's Heartilly. It's a chance encounter and the two dance together.
The whole story, more-or-less, revolves around the growth of Squall as a person. Probably in no other game is there the depth of one's personality as there is in Final Fantasy VIII. It's an amazing thing to witness the gradual changes which happen to Squall throughout the game.
Spoiling Information
This information is rather spoiling so it would be best if you did not read on in this section until you have completed the game.
Squall Leonhart is the son of Raine and Laguna Loire. He was born in the small city of Windhill. However, Laguna was not present when his son was born as Raine had his her pregnacy from him. Sadly, while Raine was giving birth, she passed away and left Squall orphaned more or less since Laguna had no clue that he had a son at the time being.
Squall was sent with Ellone to a small orphange. This orphange was owned and operated by Matron(Edea) and Cid Kramer. The two of them spent some time there together and got to know the other children at the oprhanage which included several other characters of the game - Quistis Trepe, Seifer Almasy, Irvine Kinneas, and Zell Dincht. But Squall didn't pay much attention to any of these children and merely spent his time around Ellone, or as he called her, his 'sis.' But that did change when a White SeeD ship came and took Ellone away. For the longest time afterward Squall stood out in the Raine hoping that his sis would return and cried, but sadly, she never did come back.
A few years later at a young age Squall and a few others were sent to the Balamb Garden military Academy where they began to study. As one would probably expect, Squall and Seifer remained rivals even from their youngest days, arguing all the time and so forth.
During the game Squall meets up with Rinoa Heartilly. This woman changes his life for the better, as most would agree. She gradually shows him how to open up to other people and that it's alright to get close and have feelings for those around him. This is expecially apparent that he has changed near the beginning of disc 3 when Rinoa goes in to a coma. This nearly drives Squall mad as he feels so helpless that Rinoa, the woman he loves, is laying almost lifeless on the bed, not speaking. He only wishes for her to call out his name. As a result for his yearning to hear the voice of the woman he loves, he takes Rinoa and begins to head to Esthar on his own without notifying the rest of the party members. However, on his way there many of his friends, as well as Edea, meet up with him and all of them travel together.
The only hope, as told by Doctor Odine, is to send Rinoa up into space on one of the shuttles. So, Squall decided to go with Rinoa up there. Unfortunatly while up there, Sorceress Adel ends up possessing Rinoa, and Rinoa jumps out of the space shuttle. After she does so, she regains her conciousness, and Squall ends up saving here. The two board the nearby Ragnarok and share some talk.
Afterwards Rinoa is taken to the Sorceress' Memorial and Squall rushes in to save here. Afterwards the two make a promise to each other. This promise goes through at the end of the game when the two are reunited.
At the very end of the game after the credits, Squall smiles, which is a very rare occurance, and then kisses Rinoa.
