|
Chocobo Hot and Cold is probably the largest sidequest you can play in Final Fantasy IX. After you are finished with Lindblum near the end of Disc 1, Zidane and party are able to get themselves a chocobo if they are to visit the Chocobo Forest that is on the right side of the bridge on the map outside of Lindblum. There you must follow the scenes where the Moogle tells Zidane how to get the chocobo. After getting the chocobo, you can head into the chocobo forest at any time you wish and play Chocobo Hot and Cold for a mere 60 gil per game.
How does Chocobo Hot and Cold work? It's simple. Each time you pay for a game 60 seconds will be put up on the clock. During these 60 seconds, you must navigate your chocobo through the forest and dig up items. Press the Square button to dig. When you do so, the chocobo will give one of the following:
Kweh - Meaning there is No treasure nearby.
Kweh!? - Meaning You're getting closer to the treasure.
Kwehhh!? - You're very close to the treasure.
When you get a "Kwehhh!?" keep digging around that area until you find the treasure. Depending on what it is, you might have to dig for a few seconds before uncovering it. After you uncover it, you can dig for more treasure until all the time on the clock runs out. For each item you find in the game you'll recieve some points which can go towards getting prizes from the Moogle, you'll also get to keep the items you find. Not a bad deal, eh?
Along with regular items like tents and potions, there are others known as Chocographs. The first time you find one the Moogle will explain exactly how to use them. You can find the locations on the Choco Graph on the world map in the game and if you use your chocobo to dig there, you'll get even better prizes in boxes around the world! However, at first, you won't be able to find the locations of all the treasures on the world map, so make sure to start off simple. For example, if something requires the "Streamside" ability, you won't be able to use the normal, default chocobo to locate the Chocograph.
Power Up!!
As you hunt down Chocobographs you will eventually locate boxes that send the Chocobo somewhere to level up their abilities. When it happens the chocobo will change colors and then have a new ability.
Other Hot and Cold Locations
The Chocobo Hot and Cold location isn't limited to just the Chocobo Forest Area! There are two other locations that you can play the game and dig up items and Chocographs. Chocobo's Lagoon and Chocobo Air Garden. In order to go to Chocobo Lagoon, you'll need a chocobo with the Reef ability, and for the Air Garden, you'll need a Gold Chocobo. Remember, at the Air Garden you'll be able to fight the boss, Ozma, one of the hardest in FF history!
Chocograph Locations
Below are the locations of all the chocographs, the hints the moogle gives, what you get from them, and what chocobo you need in order to reach them. You can click on the thumbnail if you want to see where on the world map you can find the chocoograph!
The abilities are as followed:
F - Field. The normal ability.
R - Reef, able to walk through rivers/shallow water.
M - Montain, Able to walk over mountains.
S - Sea, Able to walk through the ocean and anywhere on the map.
S- Sky, The chocobo is able to fly. Gold Chocobos can only land and start flying in a forest area.

Chocobo Paradise
Once you complete the Entire Chocobo Hot and Cold sidequest it's not over! A chocobo dreams of heading to Chocobo Paradise, so you'll need to locate it. With a dead pepper, head to the most Northwestern part of the map. There you should find a hidden island with a mountain on it. Look around for a crack in the mountain. When you find it, use the dead pepper and the chocobo will enter Chocobo's Paradise!
Talk to the Fat Chocobo and you'll recieve the Fat Chocobo Card!
Also your chocobo has a healing ability!
First, find every treasure on the World Map and all of the Chocographs. Then visit Chocobo's Paradise and challenge Fat Chocobo to a card game. When you challenge Fat Chocobo to a card game, he will give you clues to the beaches. It isn't necessary to even play against him, as long as you challenge him.
Ride Choco to a beach and dismount. Then press the Circle button and you will hear a chime. After you repeat this process on every single beach, you will heal your entire party. You can now heal your party completely just by visiting any beach and pressing the Circle button!
