Basic Information In the Story (Non-Spoiling)
Quina is a strange creature known as a Qu. The vast majority of Qu's live in the Qu's Marshes which are located in various places around the world. The main staple of their diet seems to be frogs. Quina can either join the party on disc 1 or disc 2, depending on if you go through the extra trouble to recruit s/he on disc 1. If you do want to recruit Quina on the first disc, it must be done after the events in the Festival of the Hunt when the party of Zidane, Vivi, and Freya head outside of Lindblum. Before going to the next destination you can explore a bit and just North of Lindblum one of the Qu's marshes appear. All you have to do is go inside and catch a frog and hand it over to Quina, then follow the events and allow s/he to join your party!
Quina joins Zidane's party in order to try different foods around the world. The whole purpose of their life, basically, is to try these foods and to get more yummy-yummies. It seems as if s/he's only motivation is to do so.
The strange thing about Quina is nobody is quite sure what gender the creature is. This can be told by the characters mostly referring to Quina as s/he, though, on some rare occassions with inconsistansies in the game, sometimes Quina will be referred to as "he."
Spoiling Information
This information is rather spoiling so it would be best if you did not read on in this section until you have completed the game.
During the beginning of the game a Qu is seen cooking in the Alexadria Kitchen if you head there while playing with Steiner. Though this Qu looks exactly as Quina does, it is really uncertain if it is Quina or not. There is not a whole lot of backstory for Quina in the game, as during a large majority of it all Quina does is talk about food.
One slightly amusing thing is that Quina often 'dissappears' during the game with another character replacing s/he's position in the party. It does happen quite often and seems out of place, but somehow it feets perfectly with Quina's oddball character.
Later in the game, there is the chance for your characters (Zidane, Vivi, and Quina) to visit the Quan's dwelling near Treno. This place is the location that Vivi grew up and his grandfather died. When you get there, Quale will be wandering about. The four of them will meet with Vivi's grandfather, Quan's ghost. (Who is also a member of the Qu tribe.)
