When you first start the game the opening FMV sequences will play. After the scenes, you'll get control of Johnny in the Detective agency. You should notice that the first thing you see is a bright green glowing circle. This is where you can save your game, and more like them are scattered throughout the world.
If you want, enter the Detective agency. There will be two chests: One containing a Mana Leaf and the other with a Thera Leaf.
Head down the steps and exit the building. Another short movie will play explaining a little bit about Johnny Garland.
After the scene, Johnny will state that he needs to start collecting information - and that's what you'll need to do! Have Johnny talk to all the people in the area. If you want to hurry up and progress, head to the left and talk to a small child. He'll tell Johnny that he should check out Times Square. Before you go, you might want to search the black car right next to the man. There you can obtain a Mana Leaf.
Head to either side of the building and down the walk to exit to the world map.
On the world map, you can press the triangle button to be taken to the menu screen. You'll also be able to save anytime you are on the world map. Whenever you are ready, scroll down and select Times Square. When you get to Times Square just keep on walking straight until you get to a small brown sign that says 'Times.' Walk behind it and a small "?" will appear. Press the X button and you'll get an item. Afterwards move forward until the scene moves forward. Johnny will hear something and stop right in his tracks. You'll then meet with the 'Just us Guys' duo, Gerard and Buigen, who will proceed to... flirting with Johnny.
After they talk for a little while, Johnny will recieve a point card from Gerard which will allow you to get discounts at all the stores in the game. When you are finished talking to them, search just a bit to the upper left for a man in a white shirt. This man will hint at the next location, that being Chelsea, so when you are ready, exit back to the world map and enter Chelsea.
When you get there, head over towards the theater and talk to a man in white.
There is also a savepoint by the theater. Feel free to save before entering. When you get inside, head to the right and then up through the door. When you get halfway across the room, you should hear someone's voice. A man will walk out and talk with Johnny. After awhile, another will walk out and you'll get your very first battle of the game!! It's pretty easy and shouldn't be a problem.
After that, head up the staircase and Johnny will notice a little girl. She'll ask him to find her brother, so that's what Johnny will be doing! Head towards the right after they speak and while infront of the staircase, you'll get into another battle much like the last. Ignore the staircase and head all the way down the first hall. Inside the treasure chest you can get a Thera Leaf. If you head inside the door nearby, you'll notice a thug standing in front of a chest. Defeat them and get a leather belt out of it.
Head back up the hall, then go right. Go all the way down the right, ignoring the other doors (The big door is locked, anyway.) and go to the end. Go down the steps and you'll get into another fight with the thugs, but afterwards you can search the area where the thug was standing and obtain a Seal of Luck. Go back and head through the center door. Inside there will be another thug to the upper right infront of a chest. Defeat them to get the contents. Head back out and go left in the direction of the little girl, then up the stairs.
After going up, if you go down the first hall, there will be another thug. Go through the battle. Behind where he was standing is a save point.
If you examine the door, you should notice that its locked. You'll have to find a way to unlock it. Ignore it for now and head back up the hall way and go to the right.
Go down the hall until you reach the large double doors. Go through the door and head to the upper-right. There will be a chest where you can obtain a tent. Exit and head to the right from there. When you get to the next hall head down it. There will be yet another!! thug battle. Go through the door down the hall a ways. Inside, go to the bottom left and you'll finally find the little girl's brother!!
Talk to him. While you are talking there will be another battle with some thugs. Defeat them and then head up to the upper left. Examine behind a wall and get the Pure Leaf. Exit the room and go back up the hall. Head to the right and get the Thera Leaf out of the treasure chest. After doing that, go ALL the way back to where the little girl is.
The two will be reunited. As they are being reunited, the little boy will give away a secret to entering the locked door. You have to jiggle it a bit and then push on it in order to open. With that advice, head back to the hall with the door and save. When you do so, head up the ladder and go into a room. An FMV will play. After it, there will be a battle. This battle is using only Thunderbird, the being that appeared to save Johnny.

Since this is the first boss of the game it shouldn't be too overly difficult to defeat. One thing that you will need to look out for, however, is Thunderbird's SP gauge. If it gets too low, immediatly use a Pure Leaf so that she does not go berserk. Also make sure that Deep One DOES NOT get it's stock gauge filled. Whenever the tiny gauge on it's profile has a lot of deep yellow all the way to the right, have Thunderbird attack with a hard hit to deplete it. Besides these points, just keep attacking and using the dusk prowl skill. After the battle, two more FMV will play.
Johnny will then be back at the Garland Detective Agency. Some cutscenes will play and Johnny will officially meet Shania. Both her and Natan will join Johnny's Party and they'll decide to head to Arkham University. So, that will be your next destination!
