New FF Versus XIII Details Revealed

August 28, 2008, 11:45 AM — Izzy2k Discuss Topic

Three weeks ago at its DK Sigma 3713 event, Square Enix announced a tie-up with fashion brand Roen. The unnamed protagonist of Final Fantasy Versus XIII is wearing a suit modelled after a real-life Roen-branded suit. The scene depicted in this newest trailer highlights what apparently is the first meeting between the protagonist and the heroine. The chance meeting takes place at a reception commemorating the signing of a treaty about the peaceful use of the Crystal. The protagonist is taking part in the reception as the heir to his country's throne. Since he doesn't like crowded places, he decides to look for a place where he can take a breath. One floor above the reception venue, he sees the heroine standing in front of a painting depicting, of all things, the god of death. As the protagonist approaches the young lady slowly turns around for their first meeting.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII has yet to receive an official release date.

Square Enix Talks Final Fantasy XIII

August 28, 2008, 11:44 AM — Izzy2k Discuss Topic

In a recent interview with Famitsu members of the development teams working on the three Final Fantasy XIII games shared some more information on their projects. The Final Fantasy XIII demo which will ship with Final Fantasy VII Advent Children Complete early next year, will allow fans to play through the early parts of the game beginning right after the opening sequence. Apparently, it will take more time to complete the demo than watching Advent Children Complete. Characters other than Lighting will be playable as well. Instead of having one single lead character, Final Fantasy XIII's story will turn all important characters into main characters. Instead of focusing on one character in particular, the story will be told through the eyes of multiple characters.

Final Fantasy XIII will be available on PlayStation 3 in Japan sometime next year.
The Final Fantasy Versus XIII trailer shown at the DK Sigma 3713 event in Tokyo earlier this month was real-time footage running on actual PlayStation 3 hardware. The development team is aiming for in-game visuals rivaling the quality of the game's CG sequences.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII has yet to receive an official release date.
As for Final Fantasy Agito XIII, the game had been scheduled to appear on mobile phones and PlayStation Portable from the very beginning. The original plan was to proceed with the development on PlayStation Portable and then port the game to the mobile phone platform. Since then the Japanese mobile network carrier has altered the original hardware specs, resulting in Square Enix to give priority to the development of Agito XIII's PlayStation Portable version. The same counts for the new Parasite Eve installment, The 3rd Birthday.

Agito XIII will apparently employ an advanced, faster version of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII's high-speed Active Time Battle system. The game's current build already supports cooperative online play for up to three players via infrastructure mode. However, because of various issues, no decision has been made as to whether this feature will make it into the final product. The development team wants to ship the game with infrastructure mode, though. Summons have been confirmed to appear in Agito XIII, too. Players will be able to directly control the powerful creatures. Summons are also set to receive some sort of growth feature.

Final Fantasy Agito XIII has yet to receive an official release date.

DK Sigma 3713 Private Party 2008 Report

August 6, 2008, 2:15 PM — Izzy2k Discuss Topic

At today's DK Sigma 3713 Private Party 2008 in Tokyo, Square Enix announced PlayStation Portable versions of the cellphone-based Final Fantasy Agito XIII and The 3rd Birthday. The former has yet to receive a release date, but the latter will be available in Japan sometime next year.

Final Fantasy XIII has been confirmed for a 2009 release in Japan. Unlike in the US and Europe, where Square Enix will bring the game to both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, only the PlayStation 3 version will be released in Japan.

The blu-ray edition of Final Fantasy VII Advent Children, entitled Final Fantasy VII Advent Children Complete, is scheduled to go on sale in Japan next March. The first print of the CG movie will ship with a disc containing a Final Fantasy XIII demo as well as trailers of Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Final Fantasy Agito XIII. The release of a PlayStation 3 bundle is also planned.
Meanwhile, the company also announced release windows for Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep (2009), Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days (this winter), Kingdom Hearts Coded (this winter) and Dissidia: Final Fantasy (December). In addition to the standalone version of the PlayStation Portable-based fighting game, a PlayStation Portable hardware bundle will also be available. Furthermore, the sale of a "Dissidia: Final Fantasy Potion" is planned.

E3 2008: Square Enix's Playables

July 21, 2008, 2:59 PM — Izzy2k Discuss Topic

While Square Enix had trailers for quite a few upcoming titles at their E3 booth, their playable demos were limited to Chrono Trigger DS, Final Fantasy IV, Dragon Quest IV, and tri-Ace's Infinite Undiscovery. We had a chance to check out each of these titles; here's a brief rundown.

First and foremost is Infinite Undiscovery, the only playable title that's not a port or a remake. Developed by tri-Ace, the studio behind the Valkyrie Profile and Star Ocean franchises, this Xbox 360 title is completely seamless, meaning there are no fades to battle screens. Players have complete control over the main character at all times and reserve the ability to issue orders to all other party members. As with other titles crafted by tri-Ace, Infinite Undiscovery features a fully real-time battle system where attacks can be combined with special moves that can then be chained into other specials. Square Enix is looking at a near-simultaneous launch in all three major regions in early September.

Square Enix continues their massive support of Nintendo's DS console with Final Fantasy IV. While the title is done and will be shipping to retailers next week, Square still took the time to go over a couple of details about the game. A full remake similar to Final Fantasy III, this edition of FF4 will include the FMV cutscenes from the PSOne version of the game - and these cutscenes will be fully voiced. In addition, players gain access to a new summon that can be powered up as mini-games are completed, both single player and wirelessly with another DS owner. American gamers can get their hands on Final Fantasy IV next week.

The other remake with a four in its name at Square Enix's booth was Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen. While it doesn't look quite like the fully-3d FF4, DQ4 features new 3D environments that still keep the classic Dragon Quest charm. The first title in the Zenethia Trilogy of Dragon Quest titles, the fourth iteration of the series is a much lighter game than the Level 5 developed Dragon Quest VIII, and weighs in at about twenty-five hours of gameplay. Keeping with the classic Dragon Quest gameplay and charm, this DS title may be the game for new players to jump into the series with.
Last, but far from least, is the DS port of Chrono Trigger. As with Final Fantasy IV, players will recieve the bonus content from the PSone version of the game, the bonus dungeon and FMV sequences. However, the majority of the game remains unchanged. While there is an additional bonus dungeon that is related to the story somehow, as well as some new multiplayer content, Square Enix was unable to go into details yet as to what this new content would entail. One thing Square Enix was forthcoming about was the fact that purist fans of the series would be able to play Chrono Trigger DS in single screen mode, with the game appearing as GBA titles do on the DS.

New RPG Rumors for the Nintendo DS & Wii

November 22, 2007, 11:39 PM — Izzy2k Discuss Topic

An unspecified Role Playing Game magazine proposes to us to discover new rumors on the Internet, in their category, "Rumors & Phantasms." Lets step away from the regular RPGs for a second. It seems as though Square Enix is leaning towards re-entering one of the most well established RPG characters in its time. The one fellow we've grown to know and favour, the plumber man with a moustache--yes, Mario--may quite possibly make a scene again. Super Mario RPG is said to come back, however, this time on Nintendo DS. It is even specified that during the course of the game, our hero's journey will include appearances from various characters emblematic of the universe of Final Fantasy. How exciting!

On another note, the famous Ogre Battle series could make its return on the Nintendo Wii. Yasumi Matsuno, who is at the origin of this series, would form a major part of this project.

Please note that the above information is only based on simple rumors. We will keep you all updated regarding any official details that come about in the upcoming months.

Square Enix Reports Financial Results

November 22, 2007, 11:20 PM — Izzy2k Discuss Topic

Square Enix today released its financial results for the first half of the current fiscal year. Compared to the previous fiscal year, sales were down by 4.9% to 72.27 billion yen ($654.17 million USD). Net profit for the same period meanwhile rose by 32.5% to reach 4.4 billion yen ($39.83 million USD).

During the six month period from April 1st through September 30th, Square Enix's biggest hit was Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. Despite hitting Japanese retail store shelves only on September 14th, the fourth installment of the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII managed to sell 710,000 copies until September 30th. Final Fantasy XII Revenant Wings (530,000 copies), the Wii debut title Dragon Quest Sword (490,000 copies), Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Ring of Fates (360,000 copies), and the PlayStation Portable release of Final Fantasy Tactics (320,000 copies) also contributed to a sales performance of 3.94 million copies in Japan. With the lack of any major releases, Square Enix's American and European divisions only sold 1.32 million and 1.61 million copies, respectively. In the US, the PlayStation Portable version of Final Fantasy was the only title to sell more than 100,000 copies, while the DS version of Final Fantasy III (450,000 copies) and Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria (170,000 copies) were the most successful titles in Europe.

For the full fiscal year ending on March 31st 2008, Square Enix expects to sell 13.5 million copies of software (down from 16.93 million last year). Furthermore, sales are projected to reach 162.5 billion yen ($1.47 billion USD) and net profit 12 billion yen ($108.62 million USD).

Crisis Core Off To Strong Start in Japan

September 19, 2007, 11:17 PM — Izzy2k Discuss Topic

Square Enix's Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII has sold about 350,000 copies on the day of its release in Japan. This was the best start for a recent handheld-based Final Fantasy game. For reference, the DS version of Final Fantasy III had sold 330,000 copies on the day of its release. Crisis Core's sales performance also marks the second best start for a PlayStation Portable game in Japan so far, trailing only Capcom's Monster Hunter Portable 2.

Crisis Core Release Date Report

September 13, 2007, 5:22 PM — Izzy2k Discuss Topic

Square Enix's Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII hit Japanese retail store shelves today. In addition to the game's standard version, the Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII - Final Fantasy VII 10th Anniversary Limited Edition, which shipped with the remodeled PlayStation Portable, and the limited edition Anniversary Potion also went on sale today, resulting in many fans in Tokyo hitting the street to get the popular items.

In front of electronics chain Bic Camera's main store in Ikebukuro a row of more than 250 people had formed before the store opened its doors 30 minutes earlier than usual at 09:30 am. At 09:00 am about 200 people were queuing south of Ikebukuro at Yodobashi Camera's Shinjuku West store. Here, store managers also decided to open early, but the row still grew even further to 300 people. Square Enix's executive director Shinji Hashimoto also showed up in Shinjuku. He admitted he has had some worries, seeing how this is the first time a new hardware was sold one week prior to its launch date alongside a new game. However, looking at the fans queuing in front of the store apparently gave him some relief. Pointing to mothers with children in the queue, Hashimoto said he felt the flow of time since Final Fantasy VII was released in Japan a decade ago.

Meanwhile, staff at Yodobashi Camera's Shinjuku West store reported the obvious: A very quick sell-out of the limited edition hardware bundle. With the limited edition in customers' hands, retail is now looking forward to strong sales of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII's standard version.

First Star Ocean 4 Details Revealed

September 6, 2007, 6:59 PM — Gwynplaine Discuss Topic

The newest addition of Weekly Famitsuu featured a lengthy article about Star Ocean 4. Series producer Yoshinori Yamagishi and assitant producer Hajime Kojima sat down with Japan's leading magazine to talk about the newest installment of tri-Ace's flagship series. While the game has been confirmed to be in development for quite some time now, the target platform had been the subject of a lot of speculation. Sadly, the Famitsuu article does not put an end to this speculation, as tri-Ace has yet to make a decision regarding the target platform. Kojima only said that the game will be released for a platform (or platforms) capable of displaying beautiful visuals. This most likely means either PlayStation 3, or Xbox 360, or both.

The game's development has progressed to the point where the basics of the battle system are up and running. The development team still has to add "interesting" features, adjust the balance, etc. Once completed, the battle system will support up to four active party members. Compared to its counterpart in Star Ocean 3, it will have a different feel to it. The developers describe it as an "orthodox progression" of the prequel's battle system with new features.

Meanwhile, work on the game's story is already finished. Yamagishi was unwilling to give away any details regarding the era, in which the game takes place, saying only this bit of information would be revealed in a surprising fashion at Tokyo Game Show. Kojima, however, assured fans that characters and races from previous installments would appear in Star Ocean 4 and the world would be the same as well. He went on to explain that previous installments did not really have a "star ocean" feel to them, but in Star Ocean 4 it would be possible to travel through space in one's own spaceship. There will also be events centering around spaceship battles. tri-Ace is promising a huge world, as there will be a lot of planets, not just two or three. That being said, the game will not be entirely science fiction-oriented, but also offer a fair share of fantasy elements.

The game's protagonist is a blonde-haired young male named Edge Maverick, the heroine's name is Reimi. The two are apparently childhood friends. Private action events will also make their return in Star Ocean 4.

At the end of the interview, the tri-Ace representatives briefly touched on the subject of the Star Ocean and Star Ocean: The Second Story remakes for PlayStation Portable. The new Star Ocean will be a complete remake, featuring new scenario and gameplay elements. As for Star Ocean: The Second Story, tri-Ace was not so forthcoming with information. It was only stated that the game will offer a new experience, even to those fans who have already played the original game on PlayStation.

Star Ocean 4 has yet to receive an official release date.
